Te Rereatukahia Overnight
We start heading along the Tuahu track following an old Maori trail across the Kaimai Range. This track is based in the Rereatukahia Valley and there are several stream crossings involved. It is a steady climb to the saddle on the crest of the Kaimai Range. This is where the track intersects with the North-South track along the top of the ranges. From here it’s just another hour along the ridge to the Te Rereatukahia Hut.
The following morning it takes approximately 2 hours walk out back to the carpark. The track takes you through a kauri grove which is probably the best stand in the Kaimais. Again, you will get wet feet on your way out.
This DOC hut is considered a standard hut which means a mattress, toilet, and running water is provided. It has 12 bunks. We are unable to book so we do need to be prepared for tenting. Cooking facilities are not provided at the hut, so you must bring your own and ensure that all your waste is carried out with you. Once you register we will send a full list of all gear required.
