Mudflat Challenge

Leaving from the end of Matahui Road the group will be guided across the mudflats to Matakana Island by local Iwi. This is approximately a 2 hour walk across to the Island. Walkers will need to have appropriate clothing and footwear which they will need to wear at all times. One group that walked over took their shoes off and cut their feet on oyster shells. Footwear will get dirty and wet! There are some mudflats to cross and it is muddy and at times hard going when your feet get stuck!! There is also possibly waist high water if the crossing takes too long getting to the channel. You will get wet!

We will join the Island at Ratahi Rock where there will be a brief history lesson and lunch. The walk will continue along the beach for about an hour and a half to the Opureora Wharf.

This is a wonderful experience to cross the mudflats and to hear the history of the Island.

4-5 hours including travel times.
